I feel like I say this every month, but this one really has been busy. It came roaring in, with nary a dull moment to relax. Which is often how summer feels - at once stifling, overwhelming, exhausting, and beautiful. This year, especially, I am trying to look for the beauty. I have a tendency to get a little blue, to rely on pessimism, to complain. I think it’s what makes me a good New Yorker, actually. We can be simultaneously extremely happy yet perpetually able to find the downside. You have to have both in droves in order to live here, to fit in here. If you’re too positive, the city will break you. Too negative, you’ll hate it here. A good New Yorker can strike the perfect balance - just like they can navigate the subway system without a map and manage to slide between the closing doors without spilling their coffee.

Lately, I’ve let myself lean a little too hard on the pessimistic side. I’m human, after all, and life has been life-ing lately. Every day we wake up to some sort of new hell, a relentless news cycle that morphs between bad and worse, sad and devastating1. It would probably be easier for everyone to just put “shit’s bad, go back to bed” on the Chyron every morning, but of course, that wouldn’t be helpful either. Now’s not the time to go back to bed, rather, it’s the time we need most to stand together, build community, and make progress fighting for what’s right.

The power of community has been on full display for me this month, from the Wold Cup kicking off here in New York, to the absolute madness the Knicks have inspired, to dinner parties with tables full of inspiring women, and even the Parisians battling the heatwave together. The energy here has been electric, and as the month has progressed the absolute joy exuding from New Yorkers has been both palpable and instrumental in lifting me out of my pessimistic funk. Brighter sun, longer evenings, and extended outdoor time has helped too - in fact, I think I’m becoming a summer person? As has a trip to Paris, which always fills my cup in ways I forget until I’m there. It was a busy one, but who doesn’t love Paris in the summer?

Anyways, let’s get into it. At the top, things I loved and bought throughout the month. Under the paywall, things you bought, things I wore, things I read, and things I did.

things i loved:

  • I am absolutely a Knicks fan now, so let’s start there. New York is the greatest city in the world, and getting to experience that collective joy has truly been a blessing.

  • I was planning to pick up some Mimetique in Paris anyways after OFELIA wrote about it, but then the ShopMy gods did me a solid and the brand sent me this, this, and this. I am already loving the serum, and should have bought more while I was in Paris.

  • I’m starting to get into silver jewelry, and have been loving this chain necklace* as an easy entry point.

  • ICYMI: I got to talk to my friend Katie Stone about her relationship to wellness, why she loves peering into fridges, and what she hopes for the future as part of my “wellness week”. If you aren’t already following her, you should be!

  • I’ve been regularly using this Verdoie face cream* and it’s really so good. Sonia even got me to start taking the corresponding supplement, which if you know me, is feat.

  • New glasses*!! Thanks Warby Parker, and to everyone who offered their feedback in the chat.

  • Misha & Puff sent me a few things and I am dying over how adorable it all is. Like this dress Lou picked out, and these sweet little pink bloomers

  • I finally went to Miss Ada, even though I’ve lived in the neighborhood for over two years. It was worth the hype. I also highly recommend the $48 entree/plat/dessert prix fixe at Little Falcon. The burger was incredible.

  • I’m not really a “tops” person so I’m grateful that Modern Citizen sent me this halter top* that fills a void in my wardrobe for the summer

  • This Parker Thatch x Big Night tote* is actually perfect for playgrounds and splash pads. I’ve been leaving it packed with the essentials and just grabbing it any time I leave the house - you never know what the day will bring!

things i bought:

After reviewing my May budget at the start of this month, I realized I really needed to cool it with the spending. There was something about May that sort of slipped out of my hands - and between a ton of shopping for vacation, daily coffees and sweet treats, and the start of summer drawing me out of the house a lot more, I went a little overboard! I am trying not to beat myself up over it, but that spending hangover is real. Of course, that doesn’t mean I quit entirely this month - I am who I am, you know?

  • Ozma Field Pants (S): I was actually on the fence about sending these back, but am glad I kept them in the end. They’re really lightweight and an easy and comfy summer pant, and I got a lot of use out of them on my trip

  • For Lou: a collapsible travel potty, buckets for the splash pad, Ten Little and Native shoes since someone told me Crocs are terrible for kids?

  • Splits 59 Megan joggers (M): I found a solid black pair on a random off price site, but love them so much I might go for another. I should have bought a small though, the medium is a bit too big

  • Levi’s Baggy Dad jeans (27x32): these (in this wash specifically) are my new favorite jeans. I know everyone loves a 501, but these feel better on my body!

  • Magazines: Mother Tongue, Vogue Collections, Cultured Cult 100, The New Yorker Knicks edition

  • With Nothing Underneath The Weekend (M): I was gifted this in pink and loved it so much I bought the navy! The hemp is such a nice alternative to linen.

  • Knicks NBA Champs tee: for the memories, you know?

  • Los Angeles Apparel Muscle Tank (M): for some reason I got hyper-fixated on owning a loose cotton muscle tank, so I bought this one in black.

  • Everlane Linen Mini Dress (6): I exclusively bought this for Paris as I knew it was going to be one million degrees. It actually didn’t end up feeling right when I got there, but I did wear it and got a lot of complements so do with that as you wish!

  • Breton striped shirt from Arket while in Paris that I can’t seem to find online to link, sorry!

things you bought:

What appears to be a lot for both travel and exercise! I think we all know that summer is more casual - we want to be comfy!! - and this list certainly confirms that. You all seem to be after good bottoms, and, apparently, workout gear that isn’t a legging! Same!
